Review: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

LeftStickRight: Latest post

I’ve had a few comments in regards to my sparse posting over the last few days and why there was a complete lack of a promised Podcast from the Smash Bros. event that I attended on the 29th of February. Well, to answer the latter, it turns out that listening to one guy blather on about something in audio form is not very engaging, and I also didn’t get enough time to provide adequate material since we were mostly barred from taking photos and not really given the time to record much audio. The former question can be explained by the fact that I have been furiously grinding out Smash Bros. in my own machine since this past Saturday evening, at every opportunity when spare time arises, and haven’t really done much to stop to talk about it.

This morning when I went into work, however, I was given a sign that today was the day that I had to post my full review. I heard a familiar noise while entering the building, kind of off in the distance. Someone was whistling, and it was likely the security guard since that is kind of his hobby, but it was a familiar tune. As I got closer I realized, it was the theme from Brawl.

So, with that in mind, onto the good stuff.

Precursor

Since this my first review, I’d just like to make a few notes about my reviewing style that might not be easy to gather with just the one review to work from. I’m traditionally a single-player mode gamer, and don’t really focus on the multiplayer aspect of games that tote their campaign or adventure modes as the primary or any kind of strong focus of the game. It’s easy for me to have high expectations of games and be let down, but I am also easily appeased, so that tends to nullify the hype effect for me and I tend to enjoy games even if they don’t live up to the proposed media frenzy.

I will be marking all games on the same scale that is very easy to understand. No numbers, no letters, no stars, just a slide-rule scale with a beginning and an end. The left-most end of the scale is going to be attributed to the worst game I’ve ever played. The right-most end will be the best game I have ever played and ever expect to play. All games will then lie somewhere in between these two. I do not anticipate reviewing many old games, so I don’t anticipate having to modify the scale.

The games? Left-most: Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing for the PC. Right-most: Super Metroid for the SNES. This is not debatable and I’m not about to discuss what others may think the best or worst games are, this is just how I’m going to put games into their order. They are better than this, worse than this, or pretty much the same.

Also, THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. It’s not a story heavy game, and I’m not going to dance around the new characters and features for a fighter just because of some veil of secrecy. If you want the game, you’ll have it already. This review will either be an affirmation of your own opinions, or fodder for complaints.

If you want to avoid reading and just want the bottom line, please turn to Page 5. I’ll always leave the last page for the short version, or at least I’ll try to.

  4. What happened to the updates? This site was actually looking good for a short period of time. Even writing this message is a waste of my time!

  5. I think you made a typo.

We all know Halo 3 is the best game ever made. You have to redo your scale now
