After having some speculation appear in last week’s news wrap-up that the German Games Convention organizers were planning to expand the expo into Canadian territory, it seems that Canada is getting a different take on the industry. And sooner than you’d think.
In May of next year, Vancouver will host the Game Developer’s Conference, the first time the event has been hosted outside of the US, with the other two events taking place in San Francisco and Austin. Think Services has partnered with Canadian group Reboot Communications to bring the event to the great frozen north, citing Canada’s growing involvement in the development landscape of the industry. With the increasing number of eyes shifted towards the country’s industry movers, it’s not surprising to see an event of this nature make a shift towards Vancouver, especially given the success of the Vancouver Games Summit not too long ago.
The event is set to take place during Vancouver Digital Week in 2009, which occurs from May 11th-15th. Anyone planning on attending the event might want to look into getting that week off, and getting some time to learn about the ins and outs of game development. The GDC has become a bit more of a media target as of late, but is still lauded within the development community as a valuable medium to demonstrate design concepts to fellow industry minds, and network among peers.
You can check out the official site for more information as it comes up, including guest speakers, keynotes and any seminars that may be presented. Very exciting news for design and development enthusiasts on the west coast.
