Every week we do a quick wrap-up of some news items that may have slipped through the cracks. The wrap-ups will be shorter versions of our articles, lumped together to give you an idea of things you may have missed.
New PS3 Bundle
It was rumoured earlier this week through the magic of blurry photography that a new bundle for the 80 GB PS3 would be arriving for November 28th that would include Rachet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction as well as Casino Royale on Blu-Ray. Well, it seems that the rumours are true and it will be coming to Best Buy in the US for $399.99. The availability of this anywhere else has really not come up at any point (we’ve emailed Best Buy Canada for comment but have not received a reply as of yet).
This goes along well with the 160 GB bundle that comes with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and is certainly worth looking at. It’s 100 dollars less than the Uncharted bundle, although with less space, and comes with a pretty solid game and a decent Blu-Ray movie. Certainly beats the pack in of Spiderman 3. So, if you are looking for a PS3 this holiday season, maybe hold out for a bit of news about this new package if you’re a fan of what’s inside.
PSN Super Holiday Sale
One of the first reviews I put out for UGTV was for PixelJunk Eden and it’s still a game that’s on my list of favourites for the year. It seems Sony is giving a little more incentive than my mere praise could offer with a half price sale for that and a selection of other games going on all this week. That means you can pick up Eden, The Last Guy, echochrome, Novastrike or Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 for just $4.99 a piece. While I wouldn’t necessarily say that I had a great time with the latter two, the first three are certainly worth the price of admission, and I can’t recommened PixelJunk Eden enough, especially for only five dollars.
This on top of the release of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix this week on the PSN and Xbox Live is re-energizing my craving for some good ol’ downloadable games, and certainly makes a PSN card or Microsoft Points card a nice little stocking stuffer for the gamer on your list. After a crazy summer, it’s been quite a lull lately and a drop in price is a great reason to try out those overlooked titles from earlier this year.
Fable II, Fallout 3 and GTA IV DLC Announced
It’s been a week heavy on the DLC announcements, with my inbox flooding with some big games getting big content in the new year. Fable II will see a new island appear, Knothole Island, which is apparently dying and needs your help to bring it back to life. This bit of content will arrive mid-December, which is a fairly decent turn-around considering the game just came out in late October. Bethesda have announced that Fallout 3 will be getting a barrage of downloadable content in the new year, with the first one titled “Operation: Anchorage” coming in January and bringing a new quest tree to participate in a military battle to liberate the city of Anchorage. There will be two other packs coming down the pipes shortly after. The last big announcement was that of “The Lost and Damned”, the long-awaited DLC for GTA IV which follows the life of Johnny Klebitz, a biker in the Lost gang mentioned throughout Liberty City. It’s planned for February of next year, and while it’s not the rumoured expansion of Vice City or San Andreas (or Las Venturas, as I expected) it’s still interesting they are exploring the plot of the story and using the world they’ve built as a backdrop again, as Liberty City still has a lot left to explore.
What do all of these DLC packs have in common? Well, despite Fable II being the only Xbox 360 exclusive title, all three games’ DLC will be released exclusively (at least for now) for the Xbox 360. It’s a big win for Microsoft, and while “The Lost and Damned” feels like it’s coming out a bit late, it’s still a good reason to hop back into what was a very solid game earlier this year. The fact that some new games like Fable and Fallout are getting some hefty DLC following closely to their release is definitely a plus, although I’m sure most people will still be playing through the existing content right up to that point considering the deluge of games that has come this fall and just the depth of what they have to offer. Very solid line-up for Microsoft and a big win for console owners.
Also, a Happy Thanksgiving to those of you in the US. I shall celebrate with you with pie and turkey sandwiches.
