Kijuju, Street Fighter Sackboy & Breaking Records – News Wrap-Up

LeftStickRight: Latest post

Every week we do a quick wrap-up of some news items that may have slipped through the cracks. The wrap-ups will be shorter versions of our articles, lumped together to give you an idea of things you may have missed.

It Came From Kijuju

Not too long ago I received an email from Capcom. It’s not out of the ordinary to get a press release or some kind of update via email, but the subject was a bit odd and I was a bit thrown off at first. It came from kijuju. In fact, that was the entirety of the email. It came from kijuju. The contents of the link that was provided reveal a candle lit room with notices like “Sheva Knew” and “Wesker is a Liar”, so you might get the impression that this has something to do with the new Resident Evil 5, even if the link itself wasn’t a clue enough.

If you investigate a bit further, you’ll find that there is some functionality to this mystery. In fact, just by sharing that link I am propagating the viral spread of content, as the more people that visit the site and find their way through its secrets the more content that is unlocked. To start you off, you can go to the ’1′ found all the way on the right, click it and then enter “Refinery” to begin your journey. If you sign up for the Capcom Unity you can even get your own personal account to gather rewards for sending people to the website.

Good luck.

Spinning Bird Kick! – LittleBigPlanet Gets Fighted

Thankfully, the rumour that was swirling around that you would be able to get Street Fighter themed Sackboy costumes for LittleBigPlanet have turned out to be true. While this kind of DLC is a bit silly, it’s still great to see content being constantly pumped into a game to at least give it a fresh look. Every week so far they have released a free costume on top of the themed ones available for the game, and it seems to be gathering a lot of positive press.

The DLC has really taken its course for the games of this fall. With Dead Space and LittleBigPlanet churning out content just as fast as the music and rhythm games coming out, it’s certainly a big argument that either it’s working very well or some companies would really appreciate your hard-earned dollars right now for little more than horse armour.

Spore Breaks Records – Piracy Records!

From the DRM Actually Works news department, it has hit the wires today that EA’s foray into intelligent design through the architect Will Wright (yes, we’re talking about Spore) has become one of the most pirated titles of all time. It wasn’t that long ago we were discussing the issues regarding DRM in Spore and how users felt regarding the SecuRom controversy. Now it seems that all the DRM in the world won’t stop the deluge of pirates if they really want at your product, and this is certainly a demonstration of that. Of course, it could be argued that Spore would have sold significantly less if it hadn’t put in those measures, so this argument won’t win over an execs making the decisions.

The more worrying thing to me were the numbers associated with Crytek’s Crysis, which showed a near million downloads on the site that was listed in the report. While this doesn’t necessarily translate to cannibalized sales, considering that EA reported that Crysis had sold just about a million and a half units earlier this year, it’s a startling figure to actually see the piracy numbers on par with how many copies were sold. The merits of each side seem to have a bit more fodder regarding these numbers, but I think we can all glean from these results that SecuRom may have kicked up a little more dust with users than EA could have expected, and may not have resulted in stronger sales.
